Population: 22,435,000 inhabitants with 55% urban population (in December 2000). Structure on nationalities: 89.4% Romanians, 10.6% national minorities in which 7.1% Hungaries.

Capital City: Bucharest with 2,016,131 inhabitants (November 1999).

Main cities: Bucharest, Constantza, Timisoara, Cluj Napoca, Iasi, Galati, Brasov, Craiova, Ploiesti.

Administrative divisions: commune, towns, counties. There are 41 counties and the Bucharest Municipality, 262 towns (out of which 71 ranked as municipalities) and 2686 communes with 13,000 villages.

State organization: parliamentary republic according to the constitution voted on 27 November 1991 with two parliamentary Chambers elected by universal suffrage for 4 years.
