The Motor Vehicle Industry in Turkey in 1996-2000
In 2000, the total domestic production amounted to 430,947 units with 45 % decrease as compare to year before. The passenger car production alone constituted 69 % of the whole motor vehicle production in Turkey in 2000. The passenger car production realized as 297,476 with a increase of 34 % from the previous year. Commercial vehicle production realized as 133,471. This indicates an increase of 76 % from the previous year. Of the total commercial vehicle production, 21 % belong to trucks, 52 % to pick-ups and 15 % to minibuses.
Exports of the motor vehicle industry increased in this year. Exports of the motor vehicles realized as 96,489 units. The rate of increase is 12 % on the unit basis. Passenger cars constitute 93 % of this amount. On the value basis, total exports of the motor vehicle industry including complete vehicles and miscellaneous parts, amount to 2,384 million US$. Compared to the previous year, there was a 6 % increase in the total exports on the value basis.
Import of the motor vehicle industry increased in this year. The number of import motor vehicles sales has reached to 339,882 units which represents a 93 % increase from the previous year. Of this total figure, 258,987 units belong to pasanger cars and 77,295 belong to LCVs. The origin of the imports is mostly the EU and EFTA countries 88 % in passenger cars and 60 % in LCVs. The market share of imports realized as 55 % in the passenger car market and 51 % in the LCVs. In the previous year, the market share of imports in the passanger car was 45 % and 46 % respectively.
The total motor vehicle parc totalled as 5,958,474 with a 9 % increase from the previous year. In this total figure, automobiles accounted for 74 %, minibuses 4 %, buses 2 %, trucks 6.6 % and pick-ups a 13.3 % share.
