TURKISH ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY IN 2000

Recently, the electronics industry improved significantly by transforming into information technologies (IT). As one of the most important generic technologies, IT has become the most important instrument used by developed countries in order to gain a competitive advantage. Given this situation, Turkey should adopt these information technologies and take them a step further so that it become one of the developed countries in the 21^st century.

The electronics industry is a promising sector with a global market volume of one trillion dollars and the potential to be the sector with the highest number of employees. Thus electronics is no longer a single industry but a basic and fertile industry which develops other industries.

In 2000, the total production of the Turkish electronics industry grew by 13.6% and increased from $2561,6 million in 1999 to $2910,7 million. In parallel with the increase in total production, exports grew by 19.6% and increased from $1163,3 million to $1391,9 million. The annually increasing trend in exports since 1990 indicates that the Turkish electronics industry typically manufactures products for export purposes.

In 2000, most exports were to European Union countries which had a share of 60,68% and total volume of $844,6 million. In this group of countries, Germany ranked in first place with $205,4 million, United Kingdom ranked second with $190,0 million, France ranked third with $153,2 million, Spain ranked fourth with $87,8 million.

Colored TV exports were mainly to EU countries with an increase of 14.72% in 2000 and a total volume of $712,25 million.

On the other hand, the Turkish electronics industry's imports grew by 20,7% in 2000 in comparison to 1999 and increased from $5450,9 million to $6577,2 million.

The distribution of imports according to sub-sectors is as follows: telecommunication 37,5%, computers 22%, compounds %17,4, other professional and industrial equipment 15,1%, consumer equipment 8%.
