Leather and Leather Goods Industry

Lather works have been practiced in Turkey for centuries. Therefore the leather and leather goods industry has a strong traditional background.

Lather production is capable of satisfying domestic demand yet is dependent on the import of raw hides.

Today’s Turkish Leather Industry makes use of modern technology on a wide scale and has a sound potentional of increasing its exports.

Leather and leather goods sector’s share in the aggregate physical production of Turkey is 2.5 % (highest in 1996 with 2.7%) whereas the sector’s share reaches 1.5% of the total employment and 2% in total exports of Turkey.

These figures ranks the industry as the 10th largest sector of Turkey.

Leather processing industry is mainly located at in organized industrial zones in Tuzla-Istanbu, Menemen-İzmir, Çorlu, and throught the country in Gerede, Bursa, Niğde-Bor, Uşak, Manisa, Isparta.

Leather garment manufacturing industry is located Istanbul, İzmir, Tekirdağ Salihli and Uşak whereas shoe production takes place in Istanbul, İzmir, Gaziantep and Konya and leather goods like bags, suitcases, belts, wallets are manufactured generally in İstanbul.
